Gran Turismo Climbs On The Top Of The Box Office This Weekend, Overtakes Barbie

1 years ago By Neil Ross

The weekend’s box office rivalry has taken an exhilarating turn as Sony’s Gran Turismo zoomed past Barbie to claim the top position. The anticipation had been building for this thrilling face-off between the video game-inspired Gran Turismo and the iconic Barbie. Despite Barbie’s impressive six-week reign, it yielded the throne to Gran Turismo, setting the stage for an unexpected twist. However, the excitement surrounding this triumph was soon met with a dose of controversy, thanks to some advanced sneak previews that had taken place nine days before the official release last Friday.

Sony’s Turbocharged Victory and Warner Bros.’ Concerns

The box office clash witnessed Gran Turismo outpacing its competition, sparking excitement and raising eyebrows. The fast-paced racing drama earned an impressive $17.3 million, capturing the weekend’s spotlight. While it seemed that Barbie’s hold on the domestic box office throne was unshakeable, Gran Turismo’s unexpected surge altered the course of this cinematic race. Yet, this victory wasn’t without its intricacies. Warner Bros., the studio behind Gran Turismo, voiced concerns about the accounting methods employed due to the early sneak previews. These previews had occurred almost a week before the official release, causing a stir in the calculation of the weekend’s earnings.

Revving Up for the Race: Gran Turismo’s Journey

Gran Turismo entered the arena with mixed reviews, attaining a commendable 61% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some skeptics believed that it might not be a true contender to dethrone Barbie. However, the film’s director, Neill Blomkamp, had orchestrated an impressive marketing campaign that spanned months, setting the stage for its debut. The film’s plot, which draws inspiration from a true story, lent depth and authenticity to its brisk narrative. The global box office raked in an impressive $53.8 million, with $17.3 million generated domestically. Amidst this achievement, Warner Bros. argued that $5.3 million stemmed from the preview screenings and therefore should not be included in the official domestic box office figures.

Sony’s Triumph and the Racing Spirit of Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo’s success arrives against the backdrop of Sony’s previous video game-based movie, “Uncharted,” which faced a more challenging trajectory despite a budget twice the size of Gran Turismo. The film introduced Archie Madekwe as Jann Mardenborough, a character embodying the remarkable journey of a real-life race car driver. Mardenborough’s incredible journey from winning a gaming competition to participating in the Dubai 24 Hour Race in 2011 underscores the film’s authentic spirit. The star-studded cast, including David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Djimon Hounsou, supported the film’s dynamic narrative.

Barbie’s Graceful Descent and Global Triumph

Barbie gracefully took second place with a weekend collection of $17.1 million, amassing a total domestic haul of $594.8 million. Internationally, it shone even brighter, accumulating an impressive $745.5 million, culminating in a global earnings figure of $1.34 billion. The film stands on the cusp of securing the title of the highest-grossing film of 2023, with only a narrow margin separating it from the current leader, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which stands at $1.36 billion.

A Dynamic Weekend of Box Office Competition

Blue Beetle secured third place, accumulating a robust $12.76 million for a cumulative domestic total of $46.3 million. The film’s impressive performance showcased a promising hold in its second week, standing out amidst the league of recent DCEU releases. Oppenheimer secured fourth place, adding $9 million to its domestic tally, which now stands at a commendable $300.02 million. On a global scale, it amassed $777.19 million, solidifying its place as one of 2023’s top earners.

As the box office whirlwind continues, speculation swirls around potential shifts in the rankings. The recent National Cinema Day on August 27 adds an intriguing variable that could influence the final tally for the domestic weekend box office. With surprises like the comedy sensation “Bottoms,” making an unexpected splash with its limited release, and the imminent release of “The Equalizer 3,” the cinematic landscape remains in a state of perpetual excitement.
