Robert Downey Jr Explains Why Was He Removed From Gravity Movie?

12 months ago By Movies Desk

Robert Downey Jr., known for his iconic role as Iron Man in the MCU, was initially cast in the sci-fi movie “Gravity.” However, he was subsequently replaced by George Clooney. The decision to replace Downey Jr. was primarily due to technological limitations that hindered his performance in the film.

“Gravity,” directed by Alfonso Cuarón, was a groundbreaking cinematic achievement known for its advanced technology and impressive use of CGI. The film not only garnered critical acclaim but also earned Sandra Bullock an Oscar Nomination.

Robert Downey Jr. had built a stellar career in Hollywood, with his portrayal of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe being a defining role. However, some prominent directors, including Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, had criticized superhero movies, casting doubt on the actors’ abilities to excel beyond these roles. This skepticism may have played a role in his removal from “Gravity.”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alfonso Cuarón explained the decision to replace Robert Downey Jr. by stating, “It became very clear that, as we started to nail the technology or narrow the technology, that was going to be a big obstacle for his performance. I think Robert is fantastic if you give him the freedom to completely breathe and improvise and change stuff. [But] we tried one of these technologies, and it was not compatible.”

After Robert Downey Jr.’s departure, George Clooney was chosen to replace him in “Gravity.” Clooney’s performance, alongside Sandra Bullock, contributed to the film’s success.

The decision to replace Robert Downey Jr. in “Gravity” was primarily driven by the film’s demanding technological requirements, which were not compatible with his style of acting. While Downey Jr. continued to thrive in his career, the film ultimately became a milestone in the sci-fi genre, solidifying Alfonso Cuarón’s reputation as a visionary director.
